I Won!!

Well, I have to admit I am surprised! In my last post, you'll remember that I told you I was prepared to go with my new composition to air it out, but I wasn't expecting to actually win anything because of how decidedly different it was. My pieces have a tendency to be a mixture of Susanne Sundfør's more orchestral side and Lee Hoiby (if I were to pick two composers as shorthand for my style, though that's not fully accurate). It's certainly not something you'd expect to feature as a winner in a songwriting competition.

But, somehow, I won.

We were allowed to perform two songs, so as a warmup I sang Edith Piaf's L'Hymne A L'amour before I launched into my original. Only your first two pieces counted towards the competition, but performers were encouraged to cycle back and continue singing in sets of twos until the contest wound down to provide patrons with music and entertainment, as well as to be able to hear each other sing. It was a wonderful event- I finally got to hear Wolfie Starfire perform, which is something I had wanted to do for a long time. My friends Svoxy and Mirabol Ishan also performed, and I got to listen to the promising Blanche- a current participant in this season of the Viral Voice.
